Land sold under forged deed

Galle Division Senior SP Keerthi de Silva had deployed a special
police team attached to the Galle Police to inquire into a complaint of
a sale of land belonging to a Sri Lankan living in London on a forged
deed.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect, a woman sold a land
belonging to her elder brother who is domiciled in UK on a forged deed
for Rs. 200,000.
Senior SP Keerthi de Silva directed the special police team to
question the attorney-at-law who is alleged to have attested and
prepared the forged deed and record his statement.
Fined and licence suspended

Pugoda magistrate M. A. A. Anawaratne fined Janaka Wasana of Dompe Rs.
5,000 when the accused pleaded guilty for driving a motorcycle under the
influence of liquor.
His driving licence was suspended for six months. Dompe police
prosecuted.
PS gets funds for development

Rattota is an important satellite town in the district of Matale,
where there are thriving plantation industries. But infrastructure
facilities for them remained at a low level until this Government came
into power, said the Chairman of Rattota PS T. D. Jayatissa.
He said the development agenda of Rattota goes smoothly, through
various allocations of respective ministries. This time we are fortunate
to get a massive allocation of Rs. 60 lakhs for development of 34. Grama
Niladhari Divisions from the Nation Building Ministry.
The PS Chairman said the funds would be divided among the PS members
for their task. The PS members arranged for the building of upper story
of the Women’s Trade Complex - rural road construction - constructing
minor bridges are other tasks, the PS hopes to have the funds utilized.
Clinics for students of remote schools

According to the instructions of the Ministry of Healthcare and
Nutrition, the Ministry of Education of the NWP-PC has taken steps to
conduct special dental clinics and eye clinics for schoolchildren who
study at remote government schools in the Kurunegala and Puttalam
districts.
K.D. Jayasena, an Asst. Secretary of the NWP-PC Chief Ministry told
the Daily News that 138 dental clinics and 48 eye clinics have been
planned to be conducted during this year and special conferences to
educate the school community on epidemics such as Dengue, Malaria and
brain fever (Japanese encephalitis) have been planned during the first
half of this year.
He said that steps would be taken to educate students and parents on
rabies and its preventive measures as 72 schoolchildren who walked to
schools had been bitten by stray dogs during last year and all of them
had to be treated against rabies at government hospitals.
Gem pits pose health problems

Illicit gem mining on either sides of Walawa Ganga from Ambalnatota
to Embilipitiya has posed a health and sanitary problem for the
residents.
The gem pits that remain uncovered after mining precious gems have
now become breeding places for mosquitos and flies. Stagnant water in
the uncovered gem pits emanates a foul smell.
Valuable trees including Jak and coconut in these areas have been
uprooted as a result of soil erosion.
Illicit fellers who fell longstanding kumbuk trees along the banks of
Walawa Ganga transport them to distant places converting them to logs.
Apply for identity cards before Feb 06

The voters in the North Western and Central Provinces who do not
possess valid identity cards to prove their eligibility to vote as
specified by the Department of Elections can forward their applications
to the relevant Grama Niladhari or Estate Superintendents for temporary
identity cards till February 06.
The Elections Commissioner has extended the date to receive such
applications for temporary identity cards till February 06 considering
the requests made by party representatives.
The Department requests the applicants to forward their applications
along with two photographs of 1 1/4 x 1 size to the relevant GN or
Estate superintendents as this date will not be further extended under
any circumstances.

Lankan complains of police extortion in Cyprus
Cyprus police are investigating a second case of extortion against
three officers already held on suspicion of demanding money from illegal
immigrants.
The latest incident surfaced when a man from Sri Lanka complained
that three people who said they were police officers, demanded money in
exchange for work permits. The man said the three had forced him and
another two people into a car and led them to an open area where they
demanded Euro 700 from each of them.
The three police officers already face charges of demanding money
from three illegal immigrants from Syria.

Deteriorating postal service

The postal service in the rural areas of Matale district is
deteriorating day by day causing immense difficulties to the rural folk.
The postal peons are allegedly delivering letters to limited areas
while holding to letters of rural areas. |
