Weerawansa challenges Opposition to obtain 10% of votes at PC polls

National Freedom Front Chairman Wimal Weerawansa yesterday challenged the Opposition to obtain even 10 per cent of the votes at the upcoming North Western and Central Provincial Council Elections.

Weerawansa said that the international Organisations and foreign envoys who came to Sri Lanka did nothing for the country except strengthen the LTTE.

Addressing the media at the NFF Head Office, Weerawansa said that his party will never support those who cause damage to the sovereignty and unity of the country.

He said as the Government is on the correct path they have extended their support to it.

Weerawansa noted that Norway attempted to strengthen the LTTE through the ceasefire agreement and arranging for an interim administration.

Using this opportunity the LTTE imported powerful radio transmission equipment, Weerawansa added. He expressed confidence that a united Sri Lanka will emerge after the elimination of the separatist LTTE.

Weerawansa cautioned that the LTTE is conspiring to kill innocent Tamil civilians and blame the Forces.

He noted that President Mahinda Rajapaksa also asked the LTTE to release the innocent civilians but they ignored it. He said the sophisticated infrastructure found in the areas liberated from the LTTE only went to show the extent to which the western countries supported this terrorist outfit.

He also asked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidi to ask the LTTE to release innocent civilians at a time when the military operation against the LTTE has intensified. Weerawansa said that the LTTE completely violated the fundamental rights of the civilians held captive by it. They have no right even to escape, he added.

The MP said they will urge the international community to support the Government at a time terrorism is on verge of defeat.

Weerawansa expressed confidence that a peaceful Sri Lanka will emerge with the elimination of the LTTE where all communities will be able to live with their ethnic identity intact.

He said for the first time in history, candidates of the UNP have joined the UPFA in the North Western and Central Provincial Council elections. Weerawansa said that the NFF will not allow Sri Lanka to be converted into a federal state or confederation.
