Kandy Sports Corr

The annual inter-house sports meet of St Sylvestes College, Kandy, will be held at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy tomorrow commencing at 1 p.m. G.K.S.L. Rajadasa, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Law and Order, Uva Provincial Council will be the Chief Guest.


Swimming c'ships at Gateway - Kandy

Top fare is expected at the annual swimming championship of Kandy Gateway International School which will be held at the Hillwood Girls College swimming pool in Kandy this Saturday commencing at 8.30 a.m. Former national swimmer Conrad Francis will be the chief guest.

This swimming championship has been revived after a lapse of two years as a result of the keen interest taken by the school staff and National swimmer Minurawani Samarakoon who is a student of the school. Some of the top swimmers who are expected to participate in this championship are Minurawani Samarakoon, Nelum Uduwawala, Sewwandi Uduwawala and the promising junior swimmer Ishara Abeyratne. In the open events swimming sisters Hadhavee and Hansani Weeratunga, Hiruni de Soysa, Dilki Perera, among the girls and Heshan Unamboowe, Shehan de Silva, Sinaru Auwardt, Malaka Perera are some of the swimmers who are expected to shine.


Rahula by 7 wickets

Rahula Vidyalaya - Matara beat Ambalangoda Dharmasoka Vidyalaya by seven wickets in their under 13 match played at Rahula College ground - Matara recently.

Dharmasoka Vidyalaya - 67 (W.A. Maduranga 16, D.V. Kulatunga 6 for 36, D. Senaratne 2 for 13, P.P. Bandaranayake 2 for 18).

Rahula Vidyalaya - 104 for 4 wickets. (P.V. Kulatunga 29, D.N. Ariyathilake 27 (N.O.), P.P. Bandaranayake 19, I.D.L. Hasintha 2 for 18)


Beckham closer to AC Milan deal

AC Milan moved a step closer to a permanent purchase of loan-signing David Beckham after saying they would buy him outright if discussions with his advisors bore fruit, Sky Italia reported on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old former England captain, who signed a five-year contract with LA Galaxy in 2007, is on loan in Milan until early March but club chief executive Adriano Galliani said they were willing to buy him should they get the permission to do so. ROME, AFP


Defending champs back for Boston Marathon

Kenyan runner Robert Cheruiyot will compete for his fourth consecutive Boston Marathon title and Dire Tune of Ethiopia will return to defend the women's title on April 20.

Cheruiyot won his first Boston Marathon title in 2003, then won the race for three consecutive years from 2006-2008. His time of 2:07:14 in 2006 established a new course record.

Dire won in Boston by two seconds over Alevtina Biktimirova of Russia, the closest finish ever in the women's division.
