Junior sailors for ASEAN Optimist Championship in Thailand

Winging their way across to Thailand on Friday January 30 to
participate in the ASEAN 'Optimist' sailing championship would be six
junior sailors under the age of 15, who will be accompanied by a coach
cum manager.

The Optimist has through the years been well established and widely
accepted small sailing boat - so constructed and fashioned to be sailed
single-handedly by a junior, with regattas and championships being held
locally and abroad for this category of sailors.
Those representing Sri Lanka at this championship that takes place at
Pataya, Thailand from January 31 to February 8 are Sashi Schaffter,
(Colombo International School) Dimitri Goonewardena (Stafford
International School) Nadine Jayaratne (Colombo International School)
Joshua Karpinski (Lyceum International School) Aitana Elapata Gunaratne
(British School) and Danii-elle Svendsen (Asian International School).
The coach cum manager accompanying the junior sailors will be Lalin
Jirasingha.
The other participating countries are Singapore, Japan, Myanmar,
Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Apart from the races that will be conducted from February 2 to 7,
there will be an impressive opening and awards cum closing ceremony. The
Asean Optimist Championship will be contested in events such as the
optimist for boys, optimist for girls and open optimist team racing.
Prizes will be awarded to the open division (1st to 15th) Asean boys
division (1st to 5th) Asean girls division (1st to 5th) non Asean
division (1st to 5th) and team racing (1st to 5th).
