Gama Neguma, a success

The Nawalapitiya electorate has recorded 100 per cent success in the Gama Neguma program by fully utilising the funds allocated last year, said Nation Building and Estate Infrastructure Development Minister S.M. Chandrasena.

Chandrasena said the President allocated Rs. 15,000 million for the Gama Neguma Program last year.

This year it has been increased to Rs. 24,000 million.

He hoped the allocation would be increased to Rs. 50,000 million next year so that Rs. 5 million each could be allocated to the 12,000 villages in the country.


Soldier, wife remanded for robbery

Anuradhapura Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ruchira Weliwatte remanded a solider and his wife who were produced before court on charges of house-breaking and robbing of household items valued at Rs. 75,000.

The Magistrate also ordered the woman's 12 year old brother who was allegedly an accomplice to be kept under probation pending a report to be submitted to Court. These suspects were identified as H.M.A Sudarshana Herath and his wife Sandya Sandamalee of Aswayabandiwewa in the Galenbindunuwewa police division.

Police told court that the suspects had been involved in several thefts previously and the husband in particular had deserted the army in several occasions in the past. Galenbindunuwewa police team led by OIC Lakmal Wijeratne produced the suspects in Court.


NCPC thanks President, Security Forces

The North Central Provincial Council at a meeting held yesterday unanimously adopted a resolution thanking the President and the Security Forces for liberating Mullaitivu from the LTTE.

Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake tabling the motion said the humanitarian operation which began from Mavil Aru had now extended as far as Mullaitivu suggesting that the whole country would be unified under the Lion Flag before on February 4.

The North Central Provincial Council wished to record its thanks to the President for extending correct leadership, Defence Secretary for his guidance and the War Heroes for their sacrifice in achieving these victories.

JVP member Anura Dissanayake also spoke.


Fines benefit Pradeshiya Sabhas

Kekirawa Magistrate Court has set apart Rs. 18.8 million to the North Central Provincial Council from fines collected during 2008.

Six Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Province have benefited from these fines with each receiving substantial amounts and the Kekirawa Pradeshiya Sabha topping with nearly Rs. 4.5 million.


Teacher seminar

A two-day seminar for Tamil medium teachers was held on January 24 and 25 at the Maharagama National Institute of Education on the topic on assessment of evaluation, coming under new educational reforms.

One hundred fifty four teachers selected from the Zonal Education offices attended the seminar. Besides them, a group of Eastern Province Teachers also participated. The next training program will be held on February 7 and 8.


Passing out parade

The passing out parade of a batch of 33 members of the STF who had undergone as training in emergency treatment for accident victims at the Colombo National Hospital Training and Health Promotion Unit will be held at the Colombo National Hospital Accident Service Auditorium at 10 a.m. today (January 29).


Inter - school quiz

An inter-school quiz contest organised by the International Association of Lions Clubs in Sri Lanka with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education will be held on January 31 at the Royal College Auditorium at 10 a.m.


Kindergarten complex

The Army Seva Vanitha Movement will open a Kindergarten building complex at the Anuradhapura Rana Seva Pura Army Headquarters at 10 a.m. today.


Yoga program

The Yoga "Train the trainers program will be conducted by the Indo Lanka Forum at Kingston College International for 30 days commencing from February 9, under the award by the Indian Sri Lanka Foundation, with resource Yogacharyas from Vivakananda Yoga University in Bangalore, which is now entering the Final phase 2. AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Galahitiyawa Central College's Old Students Association will be held at the College premises on February 1. The program includes unveiling the Association's flag placing floral tributes to the C.W.W. Kannangara statue, teacher felicitation, launching of the Association's webs site and issuance of identity card to its lifetime members.
