Massive heroin haul detected

A huge haul of heroin worth several millions of rupees was detected following the arrest of a 35 year old Nepalese National yesterday at Galle Road Kollupitiya, Police Media Spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunesekera told the Daily News.

The quantity of heroin which was in the possession of the foreign national was 1.45 kilograms with a street value of millions of rupees.

The foreigner was detected after sleuths of the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID) Unit and the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) were tipped off yesterday about the foreigner carrying a large quantity of heroin.

SSP Ranjith Gunesekera said this was the largest haul of heroin detected in Colombo this year.

During the past few years there has been a drastic drop of heroin being smuggled to Sri Lanka through the Palk Strait sea route due to increased naval patrols.
