The discussions between President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Indian
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee at President's House on
Tuesday, covered the entire gamut of India - Sri Lanka relations and
regional issues of mutual interest, a release from the Indian High
Commission said yesterday.
Mukherjee said "the ties between the two states were strong and it
was important, at this time of transition, that we should continue to
further strengthen our ties."
He said the discussions had been very productive and he was pleased
with the comprehensive briefing by the Sri Lankan side expressing that
India was willing to help Sri Lanka reconstruct war ravaged North and
'lay the economic and political foundations of a strong peace. The two
countries also discussed to work together on a reconstruction plan for
the war torn areas to rebuild the infrastructure and other support. He
was also updated on the progress of the 500MW thermal power project near
Trincomalee by India's NTPC. Before departing to Colombo, he said that
India has no sympathy for terrorist organisations and condemns all kinds
of terrorism.
His mission to Colombo ensued an invitation by the Sri Lankan
Government for a personal assessment of the ground situation.
