Till I depart
My days are boring and nights so long
Gone are the days when life was a song
The thought of never seeing our face again
Fills my eyes with tears and heart with pain.
I remember the day you came into my life
The happy moments we’d as husband and wife
You made me laugh and laugh doing funny things
Oh! The sorrow your untimely demise to me brings!
None else, for me, could ever be better than you
With you by my side, never did I feel blue
You were the bright ‘sun’ and I was the mild ‘moon’
Such a wonderful relationship ended so soon.
As a full-fledged soldier, you had a clear goal
To eradicate terrorism and set up peace for all
For this noble cause you sacrificed your young life
May our native land be free from further strife!
You and I used to talk about a distant dawn,
When we could raise a nice family of our own,
Keeping all the shattered dreams in my heart
I shall find bliss in solitude till I depart.

Solitary blues
I can still make
My bosom friends envious
Whenever I narrate
With a tinge of nostalgia
How I undertook
A breath-taking expedition
Discovering
Hitherto unknown
Pulse - beat of Africa
Dancing to the wild drum-beat
With a bevy of
Enigmatic African damsels
Who mercifully
Fancied me
Perhaps attracted to
My “Alien” or “Bachelor” status
And I can still count
On my lucky star
As I cultivated intimacy
With a dozen of
Fun-loving and adventurous sweet-hearts
Who never allowed me
to languish even a moment
Stung by the venomous
“Solitary Blues”

Reminiscence
I am watching you from a far little girl frolicking in the snow
You look a butterfly clad in scintillating woollen garments;
Racing in the snow, making snowballs, and throwing them at
Your friends reminiscence vivid memories.
Today, is yet another day where I watch the little ones at play.
How could I forget this day my child, silent tears I shed for thee;
I could not save you and was witness to a fateful episode.
Holidaying in Switzerland a decade ago;
My little girl was playing hide and seek in the snow.
Alas, she was buried under deep snow and was no more.

Tribute to a soldier
Left, right, left, right
Forward march to the battle front
Left, right, left, right
National heroes in the war front
Flags hoisted, flowers sprinkled
Roads cleared defusing explosives
Quenched Mavilaru
Then Thoppigala
Enshrining the Madhu Lady back
With blessings ushered upon, they
Walked and walked on.
Left, right, left, right
Destroying LTTE cadre bunkers
Bathing in hot sun and rain
Blotting in marshy muddy puddles
Captured Kilinochchi
Heart of ‘Tamil Eelam.’
Ah! Elephant Pass arrow re-set
Linking South and North
Year 2009 dawned in Sri Lanka
With great pride a golden era.
Lit lamps of our dark Motherland
Death even makes thee glow
History stamps you as a poppy
Our hearts seals thy as a Forget Me Not.

Birth of a New Year
The promise of
Spring, the hope of youth
Is what a New Year brings
Fresh dreams, fresh visions, spirits buoyant
On the wing
Crisp leaves to turn over
Fresh as the morning’s dew
The freckles of dawn on the horizon
With the promise of a rosy hue
Followed by the golden sunshine
‘Forever ancient forever new’
Thus another year is brought to birth
And in our hearts and in our lives
The promise of a re-birth.

Tattered book
Tattered book full of poetry
Poetry written in the namesake of you
Written with feelings for you
But I wonder if you ever read them at all
Poetry written with wakening
Of long lost memories of you
Memories buried in the depths
And corners of a long time ago
Awaken by the remembrances of you
With the moments of today
And I write to let go of you
To let go of the feelings for you
A book that was once so fresh
And pages covered with a new fragrance
Now tattered and old
Full of poetry written for you
Reminding me of the memories of you
That too was once so fresh
Now tattered and old
Crumpled and withered with long years
Of waiting in vain for you...

In captivity!
“Free, was I
Once upon a time,
To fly
Where I like,
Find my food and
Build a nest
To rear my brood”!
Then, I was happy
Enjoying my liberty,
Singing songs of praise
To God, Almighty!
Until one day,
I was captured
All of a sudden,
By some
Cruel vagrant urchins,
Who imprisoned me
In a cage of steel!
Horrified, was I
And extremely sad,
At this sadistic act
Of these inhuman beings!
They fed me though,
Some grains of rice,
insipid to my taste,
Which, I detest!
My freedom gone and
My happiness too!
To fly above,
The sky, so high!
“These human beings
Don’t seem to understand,
To value the rights,
Of a bird’s freedom
From captivity”!
