Forces engaged in mopping up operations in Mullaitivu

Troops thrusting further to liberate the remaining LTTE territory in the Vanni, speeding up to regain the Tigers last point Vishvamadu Fort confronted small groups of LTTE cadres in Mullaitivu and caused extensive damages to the Tigers.

Troops attached to the 59 division entering Mullaitivu on Sunday captured the LTTE’s last and most important bastion- the Mullaitivu township. The LTTE facing onslaught from the Security Forces from all fronts had fled from the area leaving their dead cadres and weapons.

“Troops conducting extensive search operations in the currently liberated Mullaitivu town found two T56 assault rifles and an IED.

“They also observed many buildings used by the LTTE for their clandestine operations to store their war like materials and launch attacks against the Security Forces,” Military sources told the Daily News.

Troops consolidating their position are continuing mopping up and search operations in the area.

Meanwhile, since the Tigers are confined to a small portion of the Vanni jungle, troops poised to liberate the LTTE last point in Mullaitivu retaliated LTTE sporadic attacks in Vishvamadukulam, south of Puliyanpokkarai and east of Dharmapuram on Sunday night and inflicted heavy damage to the Tigers.

According to Military sources, in a subsequent search operation troops recovered seven LTTE bodies, four T56 assault rifles and an MPMG from these areas.

Troops of Task Force IV captured the earth bund constructed in the area northwest of Puthukudiyiruppu and recovered a T56, a Global Positioning System and a compass.
