Prime Polymers wins National Quality Award 2008

The National Quality Award 2008 conducted by the Sri Lanka Standards Institute was won by Prime Polymers of the Seethawaka Industrial Park.


Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka hands over the National Quality Award 2008 to Prime Polymers Operations Manager S. N. Hari. Chairman Sri Lanka Standards Institute Dr. A. R. L. Wijesekara and Director General SLSI L. N. Senaweera look on.

In addition the company won the Taiki Akimoto S5 Award 2008 conducted by Japan-Sri Lanka Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA) and was the second runner-up of the National Cleaner Production Award 2008 conducted by National Cleaner Production Centre of the Manpower Development and Labour Relations Ministry. They also won the Industrial Safety Award 2008 conducted by the Industrial Safety Equipment and Department of Labour.

Prime Polymers a hundred per cent export oriented company set up in 1999, as one of the pioneer companies of the Seethawaka Industrial Park in Avissawella.

They manufacture medical and non-medical gloves and high performance industrial gloves for niche markets.

These gloves are used in a multitude of industries which require hand protection.

Although it was started with two disposable gloves manufacturing plants and a workforce of about 150 employees, ten years ago presently it has risen to the position of a well-established company. It owns 12 plants manufacturing medical and industrial gloves. The workforce strength is 850.

The manufacturing facility operates around the clock.

The two major product categories currently handled are Latex disposable gloves and coated machine knit gloves.

The production capacity is 420 million pieces of disposable gloves and 24 million pairs of polyurethane coated industrial gloves per annum.

The customer base of Prime Polymers extends to all time zones.

The company's quality management system is certified for ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 13485:2003 (Medical Devices).

As an organisation committed to environmental protection, Prime Polymers has launched a project to generate energy, using gliricedia. The mass energy balanced solvent recovery plant and the newly installed biomass heater are evidence to this commitment. Gliricedia collected from about 900 village divisions in the vicinity are used for the biomass heater.

The gliricedia project provides indirect employment opportunities to thousands of low income families in rural areas of Seethawaka and contributes to the country's Gross Domestic Production (GDP)

ICASL - registration date extended for 2008 A/L students

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka, had extended its registration date for the Foundation exam to be held in March 2009.

In addition the examination application closing date for the March 2009 examination has also been extended till January 30 in view of the release of A/L results last week and to provide opportunity for the students to join ICASL, Sri Lanka's largest professional accounting body with a current 29,500 student base, enabling them to be a Chartered Accountants which is recognised globally.

An official of ICASL commented that this privilege is only given for the students who sat for the Advanced Level examination in 2008.

Sierra Global enhances social welfare activities

Sierra Global Network Private Limited has taken a further step on engaging in social welfare activities in keeping with its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) by awarding ten scholarships to most needy children of Wadduwa Central College at a ceremony held at the College Hall in Wadduwa.

The company also sponsored renovating of the Special Education Unit of the school, where the children are either mentally slow or physically handicapped. This unit consists of students of many ages ranging from five years and the staff makes every effort to help them to get over their shortcoming by scientific methods so that they could move with the other students and the society without any hindrance.
