Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka addressing a United People’s
Freedom Alliance (UPFA) election rally at Wijekoon playground, Narammala
last Friday, said that there were conspiracies every time SLFP-led
Governments came to power, since 1956.
He said they killed former Prime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike in
1956. This was repeated in 1962 and 1964 respectively. Then there was
another conspiracy to remove the civic rights of Mrs. Bandaranaike.
These are not the works of good politicians. They are again hatching
another conspiracy with the blessings of foreign powers and
Non-Governmental Organisations.
“I don’t think the UNP can muster the support of the people to pose a
direct challenge to the UPFA. The UNP is riddled with conspiracies and
is meekly trying to accept defeat, the Prime Minister said. A majority
of soldiers hail from the Kurunegala district. They have brought us one
victory after another on the battle front. So the Government takes this
opportunity to express its gratitude for their sacrifice and dedication,
the Prime Minister said.
“Some said the LTTE was the most powerful terrorist movement. Even
own people warned us not to fall into difficulty by waging war against
them.
“Today we are fighting against them not with imported soldiers, but
with our own sons and daughters. We strengthened our soldiers with all
they had asked for. We also gave a good political leadership.
All the Commanders of tri-Forces too gave good leadership to win the
war which some said was unwinnable,” he added.
Very soon the war will come to an end. Please don’t ask when it will
end, because we have got to be very cautious. We hope to finish the war
with your blessings. Please protect the victorious we have achieved so
far. It could be in the battlefield, it could be in the village or in
the Motherland,” the Prime Minister observed.
“Let us rally round the President to build a new Sri Lanka. Our
Wayamba election campaign is urging you all to cast your vote with that
in mind,” the Prime Minister said.
Environmental and Natural Resources Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka
addressed the rally.
Two UNP members from Alawwa Pradeshiya Sabha and several other UNPers
expressed their support to the Government before the Prime Minister. |
