Blue Star enter semis by edging out Renown

Blue Star Sports Club from Kalutara made their way to the semi-finals of the Old Bens SC organised Golden Jubilee Soccer Championship, beating Renown SC by one goal to nil at St. Benedict’s College ground, Kotahena yesterday.

Blue Star SC were in possession of the ball most of the time during the first session.

They missed three goal scoring opportunities when their strikers failed to find the target.

Renown SC who defeated the Kalutara team on earlier occasions took things easy and paid the penalty in the first session. Both teams failed to score and at ‘lemons’ it was a blank score sheet.

The second session began with the Renown team combining well to go on the attack. But all their attempts were thwarted by the custodian from Kalutara.

In the second half the Blue Star coach made a few changes bringing in Mohamed Irshad in place of M. Fouzan. Irshad played his heart out sending in good balls to the front runners.

In the 73rd minute Sanjeeva Seemon manning the right wing lobbed a neat pass which was headed to the goal by Irshard. This put the Kalutara boys in the lead.

Renown tried everything to find the equaliser but failed in their attempts and went down fighting by one goal to nil.

Priyanga Pieris controlled the game.
