Youth drowns in pool

An 18 year old youth who had attended a birthday party of a relative
at Villa Palm Resort at Pamunugama, Wellewatte was found drowned in the
swimming pool of the hotel.
The deceased has been identified as Kandaswamy from Maligawate,
Colombo - the only child in the family. This incident had taken place on
last Saturday.
Pamunugama police are investigating.
Smooth drive to two provinces

A road network extending to 5,000 km in the North Western Province (NWP)
and the Central Province (CP) were completed by the Local Government and
Provincial Councils Ministry, Ministry sources said.
About 191 km roads in the NWP and 140 Km roads in the CP have been
renovated with funding from the Asian Development Bank and JBIC
respectively. In 2008, road development was a key area of development
undertaken by the Ministry. In addition to road projects , the Ministry
is implementing a special project to prepare detailed designs for 2,400
km of provincial roads, between 2009 to 2014.
As a result, the ADB , World Bank and JBIC have already promised
funding, the sources said.
Of the total length of over 100,000 km of road network in the
country,17,740 km are national roads while 16,000 km are provincial
roads.
Fined

A person who pleaded guilty for possessing one and half kilos of
venison with a hand gun was fined Rs. 30,000 by Kekirawa Magistrate
Srinith Wijesekera.
D.M. Heenbanda of Kekirawa was in the habit of killing deer for meat
and skins for a long time.
Tank renovation
The Agricultural Department has allocated Rs. 95 million for the
rehabilitation of Magalle Tank Renovation project in Nikawaratiya under
'Peace' project this year.
The renovation activities were inaugurated recently under the aegis
of Nikaweratiya SLFP Chief Organiser Soma Kumari Thennakoon.
This project once completed will benefit nearly 35,000 farmer
families in the area.
Awareness campaigns

The Disaster Management Coordinating Office of the Trincomalee
District Secretariat Office is jointly conducting awareness campaigns
and workshops with the United Nations Development Project to those in 75
Grama Niladari Divisions vulnerable to natural disasters Trincomalee
District Secretariat sources said.. Through such campaigns it is
intended to minimise the human losses at any disaster situations.
Sources said that the public will be made aware of the disaster
situations and ways and means of escaping.
Meanwhile disaster management teams have been formulated in the
coastal areas of Muttur, Kinniya and Kuchchaveli areas.
Mattala ideal for flying school

Mattala with its proposed airport will be an ideal location for an
aviation training school according to a Wing Commander to wished to
remain anonymous.
He said that such a training school will provide training to meet
international standards from basic stage to international advanced
training.
The Wing Commander said that the potential for such foreign
investment in Sri Lanka is high due to the restrictions that exists for
flying schools in USA at present.
He said that Mattala also provides a calm isolated environment
required for flying training and a hospitable terrain.
Rs. 5 lakhs for road repair

A road from Abasingama to Napana road in the Napana Grama Niladhari
division in the Pathadumbara Divisional Secretariat area is being
concreted under the “Jathika Saviya - Maga Neguma” programme.
The Pathadumbara Pradeshiya Sabha has allocated Rs. 500,000 for this
purpose.
Slain with clubs

M.H. Saleem of Kekirawa has been found murdered. He is about 40 years
old. His body with severe injuries caused by assault with clubs was
found lying by a canal close to the Nikawatawana cemetery.
It is alleged that he has had a long standing affair with a woman in
the area and had visited her on the day of the murder. The woman is
missing and Dambulla Police are investigating. |
