British Deputy High Commissioner meets Minister Devananda
British Deputy High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Mark Gooding, met
Douglas Devananda, Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare and
Chairman of Special Task Committee Northern Province at his ministerial
premises recently.
At the discussion held, Minister Devananda placed before the visiting
Deputy High Commissioner the prevailing situation in the Northern
Province, the requirements of the people and the problems and
difficulties faced by them.
Minister Devananda explained the necessity of rehabilitating and
putting back on track the war battered helpless people who recently
suffered from floods, never experienced in the peninsula before.
United Nation Organisation, developed countries and international
non-governmental organisations have come forward for this purpose, the
Minister added. Minister Devananda pointed out that redeeming the A-9
land route from the vicious Tiger grip through the humanitarian
operations, was a beginning of realisation of a long cherished
expectation of the Northern people and this positive developmental would
expedite transport to the other parts of the country paving way for the
farmers, fishermen and other producers of goods to transport their
produce to the rest of the country.
Considering a request by the Minister for improvement of English
language in the peninsula, the Deputy Commissioner expressing his
willingness to help requested the Minister to submit his proposals for
compliance. |
