Govt. targets $ 1,500 m from tea exports

The Government has targeted an income of US$ 1,500 million from tea exports this year over the current income of US$ 1,100 million.

"A policy package taking into account strategies in the international tea trade has been formulated by the Plantation Industries Ministry to reach expected targets this year," a Ministry Spokesman said. Meanwhile, maintaining quality, packaging techniques and tastes have been given priority in the formulation of the policy.

Policy instruments including the improvement of research development, human resource development of the plantation community, sustainable land use, replanting of tea, factory modernization, tea based product integration and value added crops diversification, market and product diversification and registration of land under tea cultivation have been considered as important areas in the policy frame work.
