Justice Imam appointed to Supreme Court

Senior Court of Appeal Judge Justice S. I. Imam has been appointed as
a Judge of the Supreme Court with effect from January 9.
Justice Imam commenced his Judicial career as a Magistrate in 1980
and was promoted as a District Judge and High Court Judge. In December
2003 Justice Imam was appointed as a Judge of the Court of Appeal and
functioned for five years as a Judge of the Court of Appeal, before
being appointed as a Supreme Court Judge.
Justice Imam was called to the Bar on February 21, 1974 after which
he practised, in his home town, as a Counsel in the Kandy Bar. Justice
Imam as a High Court Judge presided over the sensational Inoka Sewwandi
Trial-at-Bar along with two other High Court Judges and the accused
Prabath was sentenced to death for the murder of Inoka Sewwandi, which
was affirmed by the Supreme Court.
Justice Imam holds a LL.M (Master of Laws) Degree from the Colombo
University, having submitted a thesis on "Nationalisation and
Expropriation in Sri Lanka."
Justice Imam is an old boy of Trinity College, Kandy.
