Thai Pongal messages
Significant year ahead for Hindus - NFF
This year is highly significant for Hindus living in the North and
East where they didn’t have the opportunity to celebrate this festival
during the past three decades due to unsettled conditions created by
Tiger terrorists, National Freedom Front President Wimal Weerawansa in
his Thai Pongal Day message said. He further said: “Thai Pongal festival
which marks paying homage to the Sun God is celebrated by Hindus all
over the world.
Hindus show gratitude to the Sun God for ensuring them a good harvest
and for the protection of the cattle that help them in their
cultivation. This day follows a new year for Hindus. They begin this new
year with new hopes and aspirations. With the Tigers confined to
Mullaitivu jungle, the situation is different and they will be able to
celebrate this day with a bountiful harvest.
This festival will be a meaningful one if they can make a resolution
to forge national unity in Sri Lanka. Let there be a happy Thai Pongal
Festival for Hindus all over the world.”

This is celebrated with devotion and prayers. It had also been
observed in a celebratory mood, the All Ceylon Hindu Congress said in
its Thai Pongal Day message.
It further said: “We pray to Shri Sivakami Sametha Nadaraja Peruman
to shower with His Blessings on our people on this Thai Pongal day to
enable them to live with happiness.”
