Lanka supports UN efforts to end suffering in Gaza

Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told Parliament
yesterday the Sri Lankan Government supported efforts taken by the
Untied Nations under the stewardship of the Secretary General Ban Ki-moon
at the multi-lateral talks to bring a swift end to violence ending the
human suffering in Gaza.
A picketing campaign was held opposite the Dewatagaha Mosque
yesterday protesting over the recent Israeli attacks on the
Gaza Strip. Political party representatives and Palestinian

“That would facilitate diplomatic efforts and bring a lasting
solution to the conflict,” he noted.
“Our Representative in Palestine Dr. T. Jayasinghe has also been
asked to look after the well-being of the five Sri Lankans stranded in
Gaza,” he pointed out.
He stated that President Mahinda Rajapaksa, as a friend of the
President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas has expressed his
deep concern over the disastrous situation in Gaza.
The President had also expressed his sympathies to the families of
those killed in the attacks. He pointed out that the Sri Lankan
Government was watching the situation very carefully and expressed deep
concern over the violence in the Gaza strip, which has resulted in a
large number of civilian casualties including women and children.
“We have been a consistent advocate in our support for the
inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to establish an Independent
State of Palestine within secure borders to co-exist in peace with its
neighbours,” he noted. |
