Easy victory for UPFA -Athula Wijesinghe

UPFA would be victorious in Wayamba and Central Province with much ease, said Athula Wijesinghe.

"UPFA's victory at the forthcoming election in Wayamba and Central Provinces will be easier than it was at the North Central and Sabaragamuwa polls as more parties have pledged to contest the polls under the UPFA's betel leaf symbol," said former Wayamba Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe addressing a public meeting after opening the UPFA election office at Kurunegala town.

He said the nomination lists of the UPFA for the Central and Wayamba Provincial Council elections were completed by December 22.

The two lists of candidates of all constituent parties were handed over to the National Election Monitoring Committee headed by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake for final selection. Wijesinghe also said the responsibility to steer the UPFA's election campaign in the five districts of the two provinces had been entrusted to five senior Ministers.

Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts would be led by Ministers Maithripala Sirisena, Dullas Alahapperuma and John Senewiratne. Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva will direct the UPFA's election campaign in Kurunegala. Puttalam district will be under Minister Susil Premajayanth.

Wijesinghe said, "we have no doubt about our success at the PC polls.

It will be greater than the North-Central and Sabaragamuwa victory. The entire country is rejoicing the victorious march of the Security Forces in their quest for final victory.

Even the UNP has now accepted that military victory is necessary to crush terrorism before a political solution for the ethnic problem."

He also said the Government was not at all afraid of the election as the masses of Wayamba are with the Government. Refuting the opposition allegations that the Government was holding elections in provinces it could win, he said the Central Provincial Council election was last time lost by 350,000 votes.

Wijesinghe also said the Government has been able to tackle the terrorism problem successfully and develop the country simultaneously, while engaging in war.

"Hence we have no hesitation in our victory at the Wayamba polls,"he said.

Several others also spoke.
