Tissue culture technology at Weligatta

The tissue culture technology centre at Weligatta, Hambantota functions successfully.

The tissue culture technology was introduced several years ago to the farming community of Hambantota district with the production of saplings of plantains and now it is being applied to fruits and vegetables.

Dr. Hiriburegama, Vice Chancellor Colombo University also the Director of the Agro Technology and Community Science Centre affiliated to the Colombo University told the Daily News that tissue culture technology has gained popularity in Thailand and India too. She said the motive behind the mission was to transfer technology to the grassroots level with the cooperation of rural folk and also to convert the farmer to an agri business man.
