2009 would spell end to terrorism - Mahanayaka Theras

The Mahanayakas of the Malwatte and Asgiri Chapters yesterday said since a firm foundation has already been laid to defeat terrorism last year it could safely predicted that the new year would see the complete eradication of the terrorist menace from the country.

They also said that they appreciated the prudent decision taken by the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (JNP) to join hands with the Government heeding their advise for united action on questions of national interests.

The Mahanayakas made this observation when JNP leader Wimal Weerawansa called on the prelates to obtain their blessings.

Mahanayaka of the Malwatte Chapter the Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera called the decision of the JNP to join the Government as a commendable move particularly at a time when the need is for unity to face the challenge posed by terrorism.

"By this they have confirmed their stand they took when they left the JVP of supporting the Government on questions affecting the nation as a whole."

The prelate said there is every possibility of a solution being found to the Northern problem during this year after which it is duty of all to work together to develop the nation.

The Thera noted that everyone endorse the action taken by the President to defeat terrorism. "That is why even if there are problems and hardships the people are with the Government", he said.

Under the existing electoral system, no party can form a Government on its own. Therefore it is vital that all like minded parties get together for the good of the country, the prelate said.

Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddhrakkitha Thera said the forging of an alliance with Government would benefit both parties. He urged them to remain united with the Government until the problems confronting the nation are resolved. "Whatever shortcomings could be pinpointed thereafter."

The Chief Prelate said they were not interested in parties or colours. "What is needed are people who are prepared to work for the country. Today there are those who first put themselves before the country," he said.

He observed that terrorists were today confined to a small area. It is important that all territory be united following the defeat of terrorism.

Wimal Weerawansa noted that Paranthan too had been captured and it wouldn't be long before the terrorists start fleeing abandoning Kilinochchi. He said 2009 is the year when the Security Forces would register total victory and therefore all should unite to give them strength and support.
