Anusha wins second gold

T. Anusha won the second gold medal yesterday at the 20th National Youth Sports Festival at Beliatta heaving the shot putt to a distance of 10.53 m. Anusha competing in the newly introduced u-20 age group threw the discuss on the first day to go past the existing record under very soggy conditions.

Hambantota district athlete W. K. L. A. Nimali was the other young star competing in the u-20 group to win a double here yesterday. She after winning the 800m clocking 2:19.05, later went on to win the 5,000m event finishing with a time of 18:09.08.

N. S. Selvakumara the lad from Nuwara Eliya proved that he is a bright prospect for the future long distance running, won the 10,000m finishing the race in 34: 45.09, well ahead of the runner-up W. M. P. K. Wanninayake who had a time of 35:22.45 secs.

Wagapitiya wins Boys under 20 Javelin Throw event

S.K. Wagapitiya threw the Javelin to a distance of 53.34 m on a soggy ground to win the Boys under 20 event for Ratnapura District. His main rival Harshana could manage only a distance of 49-85 to be the runner-up. The ground condition was not favourable to any of these athletes to go for new records. Specially the track events were the most affected by the heavy rains that fell on day one which washed out half a day.

On the 1500 open event for girls over 20 saw Kegalle’s K.A.C.K. Abeyratne clock 5:02.0 secs to win the event ahead of Nelum Kularatne who had a time of 5:13.45 secs.

Manori Wasala of Kurunegala went over the bar at 1.50 m to win the gold medal for girls under 20 High Jump, while G.H.K.N. Kumari with a throw of 32.85 m. carried away the gold for the Girls U-20 Javelin Throw. She was representing Matale District.

Long jump - men: 1. K. S. Prakash (Puttalam dist.) 6.50m, 2. A. M. Nimendra (Matara dist.), 3. M. M. R. B. Muddannayake (Kegalle dist.).

800m - men: 1. A. P. S. Silva (Kalutara dist.) 2:05.03, 2. B. G. S. Lakmal (Galle dist.), 3. H. G. P. Sampath (Kandy dist.).

200m - men (under 20): 1. W. A. C. Saman Kumara (Polonnaruwa dist.) 22.8, 2. L. Sasnilan (Vavuniya dist.), 3. M. G. W. A. Malinda (Puttalam dist.).

200m - men: 1. P. V. P. Prageeth (Nuwara Eliya dist.) 23.2, 2. R. P. D. Sasanka (Kurunegala dist.), 3. P. G. A. Rishantha (Ratnapura dist.).

5,000m - women (u-20): 1. W. K. L. A. Nimali (Hambantota dist.) 18:09.02, 2. H. A. Damayanthi (Matara dist.), 3. J. M. L. G. Jayasundera (Ampara dist.).

Shot putt - women (u-20): 1. T. Anusha (Vavuniya dist.) 10.53, 2. D. Lochana (Hambantota dist.), 3. K. W. Madushika (Matara dist).

1,500m - men (u-20): 1. J. S. Dhammika (Puttalam dist.) 4:25.1 secs, 2. M. D. Sanjeewa (Kalutara dist.), 3. I. A. R. Sampath (Ratnapura dist.).

Triple Jump Under 20 Girls - 1. H.D. Weerasekera (Ratnapura) 10.80 m, 2. S. Kalaivani (Vavuniya Dist), 3. H.M.N. Udayangani (Moneragala Dist).

Javelin: 1. G.G.P. Maheshika (Nuwara Eliya Dist) 31.78 m, 2. H.K.S. Piyamali (Ampara Dist), 3. W.H.T. Mihirani (Matara Dist).

Triple Jump Women - 1. H.A.N. Navodhini (Puttalam Dist) 10.15m, 2. J.M.I. Madhuwanthi (Hambantota Dist), 3. J.H.M.T. Navaratne (Kurunegala Dist).

Discus Throw Under-20: 1. Damith Jayasundera (Galle Dist) 36.44 m, 2. M.A. Rimesh (Ampara Dist), 3. J.M.F. Mohamed Fahin (Matale Dist).

High Jump Under - 20 Girls: 1. W.M.J. Manori Wasala (Kurunegala Dist) 1.50 m, 2. P.H.S. Kaushalya (Kandy Dist), 3. A.K.K.R. Prasangi (Ratnapura).
