Tigers suffer heavy losses in Alampil

Heavy clashes occurred between 59 Division troops and LTTE terrorists yesterday. The troops were moving along the eastern axis towards Alampil.

Serious losses were caused to the Tigers in these confrontations, military sources said. Troops later found three bodies of LTTE cadres with three T-56 rifles.

Alampil is located about 10 Km south of LTTE’s last bastion Mullaitivu. Troops of 59 Division are attacking LTTE strong points along the northern bank of the Nayaru lagoon and dominating the Kumalamunai- Alampil road.

Meanwhile, SLAF MI-24 helicopter gunships pounded LTTE targets in Murukandy, east of Akkarayankulam yesterday morning in support of 57 Division troops, Air Force Spokesperson Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said.

In another development, 21 civilians from five families arrived in Omanthai from uncleared areas in the Wanni seeking Security Forces protection. There were 14 men, five women and two children.
