Rape of German woman: Three arrested

Police arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged rape of an elderly German woman and robbing her jewellery at a hotel room in Marawila.

OIC Marawila Keerthi Bandara arrested the main suspect in connection with the rape from his hideout in Kurusapalliya, Marawila.

"Police also found part of the jewellery stolen from the victim aged 80," Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said.

Two suspects were arrested on Wednesday at around 10.00 pm at the Peliyagoda roadblock when they were returning from Polonnaruwa.

Meanwhile, a Hindu priest was shot dead yesterday morning in Mamangama, Batticaloa.

Subramaniam Kamalaraj, 32, the Chief Priest of Sri Sivamuththu Kaliamman Kovil was shot dead by unidentified suspects who stormed the Kovil around 1.30 am in Mamangama.

Batticaloa police are investigating.
