Rains damage over 6,000 houses

About 1,941 houses were fully damaged and another 5,109 houses were partially damaged following the heavy rains that lashed the country.

According to Disaster Management Centre sources about 37,345 families numbering 136,298 persons were affected. The families are from Jaffna, Mannar, Trincomalee, Moneragala and Kandy districts.

The rains have affected 30,591 families numbering 110,493 persons in the Jaffna district.

The prevailing intermittent showers accompanied by strong winds and thunder will continue over the Western Province for another 24 hours and fishermen should refrain from going out to sea, sources said.
