Central Bank confiscates TRO funds
colombo: The Central Bank said yesterday it had confiscated money
held by a front organisation of the Tigers under anti-terror laws.
The Government had already frozen bank accounts of The Tamil
Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO) in August 2006 charging that money
raised for humanitarian aid was being diverted to the LTTE.
"Approximately 71 million rupees (645,000 dollars) which was lying to
the credit of the TRO at the time the funds of the TRO were frozen, have
now been forfeited to the State," the Bank said in a statement.
It said investigations were underway to trace other assets of the TRO,
whose bank accounts were also frozen by the US Government. Washington
classes the LTTE as a foreign terrorist organisation.
