Ceremony to mark President's third year anniversary
A special ceremony to mark the third anniversary of President Mahinda
Rajapaksa's ascendancy to Executive Presidency will be held at the
Digawapi Chaitiya on November 21 and 22.
Arrangements have been made to invoke blessings on the soldiers in
the battlefield and bestow merit on War Heroes.
A special pooja of 84,000 lamps and 84,000 red lotuses organised by
Soldiers' parents will also be held.
War Heroes' commemoration
The 19th annual commemoration ceremony of dead and missing War
Heroes, organised by Batch-mates of Intake Kotelawala Defence
University-VII will be held at Gangarama Temple, Hunupitiya, Colombo 02
on November 14 at 6 pm. A Bodhi Pooja will be held to invoke blessings
on War Heroes.
The Intake-VII get-together will be held at Holiday Resort, Wadduwa
the following day at 10 am.
Olcott Memorial Oration
Professor Ravindra Fernando will deliver the Centenary Olcott
Memorial Oration of the Old Boys' Association of Ananda College, Colombo
on November 15 at 5.00 p.m. at the college Kularatna Hall.
He will speak on 'Poisoning - A modern epidemic in Sri Lanka.'
Prof. Fernando, an old boy of the college, is the Senior Professor of
Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of the Faculty of Medicine, University
of Colombo. He is also the Director of the Centre of Study Human Rights
of the Faculty of Law of the same university.
Remembering B.D. Rampala
The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) will commemorate Sri
Lanka's General Manager of Railway, Engineer B.D. Rampala. The 2008 B.D.
Rampala memorial lecture will be delivered by Eng. (Dr.) P. Ramachandran
of the University of Moratuwa on November 17 at 5.15 p.m. at the IESL
Auditorium 120/15, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.
The lecture is entitled 'Significance of Railway Transportation in
Supply Chain Management.'
Sishya Sahithya Ulela
Schoolchildren can send literary creations for Sishya Sahithya Ulela
2009 organised by the Students' Federation of the Peradeniya University
upto December 15.
These competitions are categorised into three groups with junior,
senior and Advanced Level classes. Junior level includes classes from
grade 1 to 8 and senior level consists of classes from grade 9 to 13
together with the Advanced Level.
Creations include essay writing, short stories, cartoons, art and
songs both in Sinhala and Tamil languages.
Contributions must be sent to President, Literacy Sub Committee,
Students' Federation, Peradeniya University, Peradeniya.
Burgher Assn. Members' Nite
The Burgher Association Members' Nite will be held on November 15 at
the Janajaya Reception Hall, Allan Avenue (Zoo Road), Dehiwela.
The event is organised by the Dehiwela-Mount Lavinia Zone of the
Burgher Association is named "Rock N' Roll Nite."
Anniversary sale, exhibition awards night
The Muslim Ladies' Study Circle's second anniversary sale, exhibition
and award ceremony will be held on November 15 and 16 from 10.00 a.m. to
6.00 p.m. at the Muslim Ladies' Study Circle at 201, D.R. Wijewardena
Mawatha, Colombo 10.
Drama festival
The 29th National Youth Drama Festival - 2008 will be held from
November 14 to 24 at Lumbini Theatre, Colombo 05. This is jointly
organised by the National Youth Services Council and Youth Affairs
Ministry.
The inaugural ceremony will be held on November 14 at 6.30 p.m. under
the patronage of Youth Affairs Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchy.
Singithi Perahera
Year 1 and 2 students of Gangodawila Wanatha Road Samudradevi Model
Primary School will stage a Singithi Perahera (mini-procession) from the
school premises to High Level Road junction and back on November 14 at
8.30 a.m.
Principal W.S. Ranasinghe said the event is organised with the
assistance of the staff to enable the students to display their
aesthetic talents.
Public seminar
The Pathfinder Foundation under its Sanvada (Dialogue) programme is
organising a public seminar on the Budget 2009 as a rapid response to
the Government Budget Proposals.
This public seminar will be held on November 14 from 8.30 a.m.-12.30
p.m. at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, 100, Independence Square,
Colombo.
Cochlear implant for first time
Cochlear Implant surgery will take place in government hospital (Lady
Ridgeway Children's Hospital) for the first time in Sri Lanka, November
23. The surgery will be performed by Dr. D.K.S.N. Yasawardana with the
assistance of Prof. Mohan Kameswaran.
Prize giving
The annual prize giving of Princess of Wales College, Moratuwa will
be held on November 17, at 2 p.m. at the College Hall.
Priyantha Srilal Nonis, Director-National Schools and Professor
Chamara Kumari Ileperuma will participate as chief guests and old girl
Bernil Fernando will participate as the guest-of-honour, on the
invitation of Principal, Upuli Gunasekera.
Heart patient needs help
Fifty seven year old, S.A.P. Rodrigo (Berty) is suffering from
coronary artery disease and the Cardiologist of the National Hospital of
Sri Lanka (NHSL), Dr. Gamini Galappaththy has recommended therapeutic
procedure Stenting to LAD.
The consumbales, a pair of stents are non available at the NHSL which
had to be purchased in the open market cost around Rs. 400,000.

Unregistered vehicles seized
Kapila Somaratne - Panadura group corr.
Three brand new motor vehicles valued over Rs. one million imported
without paying customs duty and not registered at the Motor
Commissioner's Department were seized by Police on Tuesday.
These vehicles were hidden in a garage at a house of a motor vehicle
businessman involved in another case obstructing a customs officer two
years back, police said.
