Senanayake MMV in four VB finals

The 10th annual DSI Super Sports All Island Schools Volleyball Championships organised by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation in association with the Ministry of Education will be worked off at the Sugathadasa Indoor stadium today and tomorrow commencing from 1.00 p.m.

The two-day event is sponsored by DSI group of Companies for the DSI Super Sports Championships. The Championship which was inaugurated nine years ago with a total of hundred odd teams has now progressed to a record 5,000-team mark. The DSI came to assist the national sport at a time when it was in troubled waters.

Before reaching this final stage, the four categories for boys and girls under 12, 14, 16, 18 were completed at Zonal, provincial and national level with 4,350 teams from all parts of the country in the ferry.

Minister of Nation Building Salinda Dissanayake will be the chief guest today. The day’s proceedings begin with the under 14 girls final between St. Bernadette’s MV, Polgahawela and Model School, Ibbbagamuwa. This will be followed by the other final matches of under 14 boys and under16 boys and girls.

Tomorrow’s events will begin with the under 12 girls final between Dutugemunu MMV and St.

Bernadette’s MV, Polgahawela. This will be followed by the Under-18 boys and girls matches and the awards ceremony.

The most notable achievement of the whole championship was the victory gained by Maymalay Tamil Vidyalaya, Badulla in the under 12 category when they defeated high riding Mahagamasekera MV from Radawana in the pre-quarter final. They not only won the match but also set up an all-time record in the quarter final, winning a set by a convincing margin of 15-0.

In recognition of this achievement the sponsors have made arrangements to make a special award for the Maymalay Yamil Vidyalaya team from Badulla at the awards ceremony. The chief guest at tomorrow’s finals will be the Minister of Education Susil Premayantha with the President of the SLVBF and Minister of Ports Development Dilan Perera, Minister Dayasritha Tissera, Nandadasa Rajapakse Chairman DSI Group of Companies and Sudharshani Fernandopulle as gusts of honour.
