Sri Lanka win decider by seven wickets

Edge out Windies 3-2 in five-match ODI series:

Sri Lanka trounced West Indies by seven wickets in their decisive fifth and final women’s one-day international cricket encounter played at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday. The win enabled the hosts to win the five-match series 3-2.

Sri Lanka women’s team came out with a brilliant team effort and were outstanding. They put up an excellent effort to bowl the Caribbean out for their lowest total in the five-match series - 120 all out in 44.4 overs.

Put into bat, the West Indies were all at sea and the only bright spot in the visitors’ innings was the lone effort of Deandra Dottin who top scored with a fighting 31. Only two other Windies batswomen were able show some resistance to the Lankan bowling - Stefanie Taylor (26) and Merissa Aguilera (28).

The West Indies has three ‘ducks’ in their scorecard as Sri Lanka maintained the pressure throughout the innings. Suwini de Alwis, who did the most of the damage to the West Indian batting, recorded her best bowling analysis - 4 for 24, to be adjudged Woman of the Match.

Charline Taitt and Kirbyina Alexander were both dismissed in run outs without scoring, adding salt to the visitors’ wounds. Sripali Weerakkody, Chandi Wickramasinghe, Chamari Polgampola and Shashikala Siriwardena captured a wicket each.

The West Indies bowlers did not look that impressive as Sri Lanka openers Chamari Polgampola and Dedunu Silva - the duo who put on a century opening stand earlier in the series, shared another useful 63-run partnership before Polgampola was bowled by Anisa Mohamed for 22. Dedunu Silva was trapped leg before shortly afterwards, also off Mohammed.

Hiruka Fernando and skipper Shashikala Siriwardena consolidated their position in a 44-run alliance which brought the Lankan total up to 108.

Siriwardena departed for 32, caught by Stacy Ann King off Stefanie Taylor.

However, Hirura Fernando (12) and Eshani Kaushalya (9) took Lanka to victory without losing further wickets. The home team reached the target with 12.5 overs to spare.

Captain Siriwardene completed an excellent tournament to be adjudged Player of the Series, having Woman of the Match award in the second game played at Dambulla. Dedunu Silva won the Player of the match award in the third ODI.

The only bright spot for the West Indies at the awards ceremony was Stacy Ann who has the distinction of winning the player of the match award twice in the opening match and the fourth ODI.
