Mahanama's rugby on the rise
A school which has reached new heights in the field of rugby is
Mahanama College, Colombo 03. The lads from Kollupitiya came up with a
superb performance to emerge runners up of segment two of the schools
'A' division rugby tournament losing just one match to eventual
champions St. Joseph's College, Colombo.
They have been promoted to play in segment one of the 'A' division
schools rugby tournament next year. In addition their under 12, 14 and
under 16 rugby teams won many tournaments conducted by the Sri Lanka
Schools Rugby Football Association and Western Province RFA. They were
awarded Milo and Suntel trophies for their achievements.
The under 12 team emerged plate champions of the Western Province by
beating D.S. Senanayake (7-0), St. Joseph's (47-0), Piliyandala MMV
(28-0) and Wesley (14-0). The under 14 team emerged runners up of the
Western Province League by overcoming Wesley (21-0), Dharmapala (40-0),
Prince of Wales (47-7) and Science College (26-0) and also beat D.S.
Senanayake (12-0) in their Big Match. Mahanama's under 16 team emerged
shield champions of the Western Province League by beating Lalith
Athulathmudali MV 10-5 in the semi-final and D.S. Senanayake 12-7 in the
final. They also emerged bowl champions of the All Island tournament by
overcoming Carey 12-nil having beaten St. Joseph's 7-5 and St. Aloysius
34-nil on their way to the final.
Mahanama owe their success to their dedicated coach Lasantha
Gunawardena and his Assistant Govithra Sujan who have taken great pains
to mould them into a champion outfit.
