Azwer received threatening call
Presidential Advisor and Media Ombudsman A.H.M. Azwer has complained
to Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa of a threatening phone call
made to him after he relayed a message to the Muslims of Colombo over a
SLBC Tamil Radio programme.
In his letter Azwer said on Sunday (9/11) he received a phone call
around 9.30 p.m. by a person who said "What happened to Alfred
Duraiappah would happen to you and Alavi Mawlana soon."
This threatening call was as a result of his relaying a message to
the Muslims of Colombo on 07.11.2008 live on 'Wasantham' SLBC after
attending the D.A. Rajapaksa commemoration ceremony at Tangalle. (with
the participation of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Governor of the Western Province Alavi Mowlana proceeded him in the
same 'live' broadcast.
They had to do this since they received several phone calls from
Colombo alleging that certain elements were distributing anonymous and
scurrilous notices forcing shop keepers to close their shops in Maradana,
Pettah etc.
He appealed to the Defence Secretary to order the authorities
concerned to institute an immediate probe regarding the above
threatening telephone call, (number provided) and bring the culprits to
book.
