Lankan women lose first ODI to Windies

West Indies women posted a convincing 40 run victory over the Sri
Lankan women in the opening match of the five match series which was
played at the Rangiri Dambulla International cricket stadium yesterday.
West Indies women’s innings well supported by a brilliant knock from
Stacy Ann King’s 70, was enough for them to trounce the Lankans. After
winning the toss, Lankan Skipper Shashikala Siriwardena decided to bowl
first.
Lankan women got off to a good start, not letting the visitors to
swell their total that much. Windies lost their first wicket very early
as Deandra Dottin (05) whe shewas lbw to Sripali Weerakkody her very
first over. The newcomer Juliana Nero could not remain at the wicket for
so long. She too was out for of eight caught by Chamari Polgampola off
the bowling of Chamani Senevirathne. Stefanie Taylor (19) was the next
to go off the bowling of Weerakkody.
Then she picked up her third as Nadine George, when the Windies
skipper departed after scoring just seven runs off the bowling of
Weerakkody caught by Senevirathne. Charlene Taitt followed soon without
scoring with Lankan skipper getting the wicket, caught by Polgampola.
The sixth wicket fell at 81 as Danielle Small was dismissed for 11.
After the sixth wicket, Kirbyina Alexander joined Stacy-Ann King who
was going on well with two sixes. After a 55 run partnership between
them, Alexander departed for 13. The visitors could not carry on with a
big partnership after that and lost wickets without that much of runs
being added to the total. Anisa Mohammed was out for one run caught and
bowled by Suwini de Alwis.
Windies suffered their biggest blow after that when she picked up the
wicket of the in form batswoman Stacy-Ann King, caught by Dedunu Silva
for 70 runs. Afy Fletcher was the last to go for four to end up their
innings at 167 with five balls remaining.
Sri Lankan women started off with a good sense with Dedunu Silva and
Chamari Polgampola. Dedunu, the most attacking player from the home
side, paved the way for a good start when compared to the visitors.
The first wicket fell at 39. Dudunu Silva who was 23, with four
boundaries departed caught by Anisa Mohammed off the bowling of Afy
Fletcher. The Sri Lankan skipper Shashikala Siriwardena could not stay
for long and was lbw for five runs. Fletcher picked up the wicket.
Chamari Polgampola (29), the other woman inform was the next to return
to the pavilion lbw to Mohommed when the total read 91. From then on,
the wickets fell at regular intervals.
Hiruka Fernando departed at 21 after giving a return catch to Anisa
Mohammed. Eshani Lokusuriya and Suwini de Alwis were out with the total
on 109. Lokusuriya scored 10 and Alwis got out in the next boll for
seven. The rest of the wickets
fell for just 18 runs with no other batswoman reaching double figures
and giving a 40 run victory to the visitors.
