The President’s Prize and the Captain’s prize were won by G. Wickremasighe and R. Abeyratne respectively at the Golf matches which were played over the weekend for two consecutive days in somewhat unfavourable weather conditions.

The Ladies Stroke Play Championship too were played with a record crowd of participants with over twenty players.

The Ladies Trophy was won by no other than the Veteran spots woman Swenitha Selvaratnam beating all her young and energetic younger golfers who took part in the tournament with vigour and determination and enthusiasm. After a lapse of several years Nuwara Eliya golf enthusiasts witnessed a most glamorous golfing fete when the old and young ladies stroke play was played with such a large number of ladies taking part in this most well fought game.

The Results of the Ladies Stoke play were: Winner S. Selvaratnam, Runner up M. Awn., 0-18 Gross Winner Y. Abhayaratne, Runner up D. de Zoysa, 19-28 Gross Winner K. Herath, Runner up N. Jayaratne, 1st day Gross J. Hong, 2nd day Gross S. Boyle, 1st day R. Johnson, 2nd day L. Harris.

At the conclusion of the tournament there was a gala reception hosted by the Rockland Distilleries with the demonstrations of different varieties of wines together with the array of dishes put out by the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club with the young and energetic Secretary Wignesh Nadarajah, who is a culinery expert in his field.

The veteran planter and the septuagenerian Clive Tissera, who is the Trustee of the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club together with the captain of the club Murugiah Balaendran and their officials were in full attention to make the tournament a rolciking success.

All in all however there was widespread speculation that in the Captain’s Prize there had been alleged medling with the scores! This matter is being probed into.

The prizes were given away by Swarnamali Umesh de Silva the wife of the President of the club Mr. Umesh de Silva.
