Police to present new traffic plan, security measures to SC

COLOMBO: Police will inform the Supreme Court of the current security developments along with the presentation of the new traffic plan in accordance with the recent Court ruling.

IGP Jayantha Wickramaratna told the Daily News that this step is necessary as the security situation has changed since the ruling.

IGP Wickramaratna said several suicide bombings have taken place in places including Boralesgamuwa and Anuradhapura.

“We have to consider these facts. It is our duty to inform the Supreme Court of these new developments,” the IGP said.

The Supreme Court has ordered the IGP to formulate a new traffic plan for the Galle road in Colombo, along with the Colombo Municipal Council, the Urban Development Authority and the University of Moratuwa.

He also said that the coming period would be critical in security aspects as troops are about to capture Kilinochchi very soon.

He said with that victory there can be serious incidents such as bombings by disgruntled LTTE elements, in most instances targeting innocent civilians.

The IGP the primary task of the Police is to take possible action to provide maximum security to the innocent public as well as Army personnel and Police personnel targeted by the LTTE.

“Since they have been failing on the war front they are targeting the innocent Forces and Police personnel at their working places like the incidents in Vavuniya and also in Colombo near Sambuddhaloka Vihara,” the IGP added.

“So we have to introduce new measures and take all possible action to prevent such occurrences.
