Large stocks of unhygienic food items worth nearly Rs. 300,000 were seized by Kandy Municipal Health Department offices during raids on nearly 200 institutions in Kandy including hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and production agents yesterday.

"Nearly 100 restaurants came under our scrutiny and a large number of them had outdated and unhygienic food put up for sale," said Municipal Health (Food) Inspector H.S. Wijetunga.

Over 10 supermarkets were also checked and several managers were warned to remove outdated food stuffs and other items from their shelves, he added.

A team led by Inspector H.S. Wijetunga conducted the raids directed by Chief MoH Asoka Senarath.
