Hartal in Jaffna against LTTE attacks

JAFFNA: People in Jaffna launched a hartal yesterday to
protest against the LTTE suicide attack on Wednesday targeting two
merchant ships carrying essential food items and cement to civilians in
Jaffna.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera told the Daily News that the
hartal was launched yesterday in Jaffna by the public to protest against
the LTTE attack on Wednesday at the two merchant vessels carrying food
supplies to Jaffna.
"All shops, schools, banks and other establishments were closed. All
services including transport services came to a standstill. All
Government and private institutions closed their business in support of
the hartal. Hospitals functioned as usual," SSP Gunasekera said.
The attempt by three LTTE suicide boats targeting two merchant ships
carrying food items an cement bound for Jaffna were foiled by the Navy
on Wednesday morning in the seas off Mailadi. Two of the three Tiger
boats were destroyed by sailors while the latter was captured. The two
freighters Nimalawa and Ruhunu were voyaging from Colombo to
Kankesanthurai transporting the food items and cement for Jaffna
civilians when they came under attack. |
