Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera told the Daily News that the hartal was launched yesterday in Jaffna by the public to protest against the LTTE attack on Wednesday at the two merchant vessels carrying food supplies to Jaffna.

"All shops, schools, banks and other establishments were closed. All services including transport services came to a standstill. All Government and private institutions closed their business in support of the hartal. Hospitals functioned as usual," SSP Gunasekera said.

The attempt by three LTTE suicide boats targeting two merchant ships carrying food items an cement bound for Jaffna were foiled by the Navy on Wednesday morning in the seas off Mailadi. Two of the three Tiger boats were destroyed by sailors while the latter was captured. The two freighters Nimalawa and Ruhunu were voyaging from Colombo to Kankesanthurai transporting the food items and cement for Jaffna civilians when they came under attack.
