Edna Chocolates will be going to consumer courts today to obtain
relief over the melamine controversy in their product.
General Manager Marketing and Sales, Thusitha Wijesinghe said they
have received several certificates from India, China and Singapore
giving conflicting test results.
The Health Ministry and the Consumer Protection Authority has also
obtained certifications from Singapore and India.
The Indian certificate clears Edna while the Singapore certificates
says there is melamine in Edna products.
Wijesinghe said due to this controversy they have stopped production
and 3,000 employees are out of jobs. “The World Health Organisation
(WHO) guideline says that a maximum of 2.5-ppm melamine can be included
in a product.
“Like most of the other products Edna has less than 1.5ppm in our
products which is not harmful to health,” he said.
