Royal-Wesley stickers in action
Richard DWIGHT
Strong ties between Royal and Wesley have been mutually established
through a sustained existence over 100 years. Mainly enhanced to an
extent, by the different annual encounters on the field of sport one
amongst which was last year’s inaugural Dudley de Silva shield for the
hockey fixture between the two colleges.
This coveted shield, on the year of presentation was won by Royal and
the second contest in the series, will be held today at 4.15 p.m. at
Campbell Park.
The shield is named after a highly successful Principal of Royal -
Dudley K.G. De. Silva, who took over from an equally distinguished
Principal in J.C.A. Corea.
Dudley’s approach to education was holistic, apart from ensuring the
academic side he was very keen on the promotion of the arts, culture and
all forms of sport.
He was a highly accomplished educationist, and its most fitting that
he be remembered in this way.
The match will also be significant, in that it will witness the
coming to be of the annual best player award, to perpetuate the memory
of a former Wesley hockey player, R.O.D. Paul on his demise.
Here to make the presentation from Australia, is his brother Dr.
Gershu Paul, Wesley’s versatile sportsman of yesteryear.
The Chief guest on the occasion will be Welsey’s one time hockey
player professor Maharoof Ismail.
