Electoral reforms report to Cabinet today
COLOMBO: The Cabinet Sub Committee which studied the interim
report recommendations of the Parliamentary Select Committee on
electoral reforms will submit its report to the Cabinet today, said Sub
Committee Chairman Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister
Janaka Bandara Tennakoon.
Tennakoon said as directed by the President the Sub Committee headed
by him further reviewed the interim report recommendations at a meeting
yesterday.
Three review meetings were held earlier.
Tennakoon said the Sub Committee had approved the provisions ensuring
minority representation in Local Government delimitation Commissions as
proposed by Minister P. Chandrasekeran. Tennakoon said this factor has
also been included in the Cabinet memorandum submitted by him earlier.
The Sub Committee members included Prime Minister Ratnasiri
Wickramanayaka and Ministers Maithripala Sirisena, Susil Premajayantha,
Karu Jayasuriya, Arumugam Thondaman, Dinesh Gunawardena, Douglas
Devananda, Ferial Ashraff, M.L.M. Athaulla, Prof. Tissa Vitharana, D.E.W.
Gunasekera, Patali Champika Ranawaka and P. Chandrasekaran
representative of all parties included in the Cabinet.
