Commemorative pinkama

A commemorative pinkama to mark the 96th birth anniversary of Ven. Agga Maha Panditha Vidya Vansa Weligama Sri Gnanaratana Mahanayake Thera of the Amarapura Dhammarakshitha Nikaya will be held at the Ratmalana Mallikaramaya on October 13 and 14.

It will include a dhammadesana by Kelaniya University Chancellor Ven. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Chief Sanghanayake Thera on October 13 at 6.30 p.m. and a Sanghika dana to 100 bhikkhus on October 14 forenoon. Diyunuwa the latest book authored by Ven. Gnanaratana Mahanayake Thera will be released on this day at the conclusion of the Sangika dana.


National College of Education

The Education Ministry is calling applications from qualified candidates to be enroled for National College of Education for 2009.

The Gazette Notification will be issued today.

The 11 courses will be conducted in all three mediums.

Candidates can send applications in the specimen application form to Chief Commissioner (Teacher Education), College of Education Branch, Ministry of Education, Isurupaya, Battaramulla before October 31, sources added.


Wesley Prize day

The 134th annual prize giving of Wesley College, Colombo will be held at 5.00 p.m. today.

Professor L. S. Perera, Director General, National Institute of Education, will be the chief quest.


Change of venue

The venue for the monthly Service of 'Praise and Worship' conducted every second Sunday at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour is changed for this month.

It will be held at 10.30 a.m. on October 12 at St. Luke's Church, Maradana Road (opposite Aquinas) Borella. This service is open to all.


Acting Minister

Enterprise Development Minister Mano Wijeyeratne has been appointed acting Minister of Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion.

Dr. Sarath Amunugama is on an official visit to Washington to attend the IMF World Bank annual meetings.

Minister Amunugama is away from the country until October 17.


Burgher delicacies

The Dutch Burgher Union, as part of its centenary celebrations will present a sale of Burgher Delicacies from 10.00 a.m. on Sunday at the DBU Hall, No. 114, Reid Avenue, Colombo 4.


Public Seminar on ABA

The Royal Asiatic Society, Sri Lanka will host a public seminar (Sinhala and English) on "ABA": Distorting History? from 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. on October 13 at the Mahaveli Centre, 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Dr. W. M. K. Wijetunga, Prof. Oliver Abeynayake and Shasthrapathi Vitharandeniye Medhananda Thera will be the speakers.


Charitha Hathak

Wilson Gunaratne's Charitha Hathak will go on boards at 5.00 p.m. tomorrow at the Bandaranayake Central - College Hall (Gampaha) The play has been organised to raise funds for Pethiyagoda Methodist Church Building (Gampaha)

The cast include Wilson Gunaratne, Ramani Fonseka, Gamini Hettiarachchi, Premaratne Thennakoon, Pathum Sanjaya, Shawendra Settinayake, Thilina Perera.

Music is by Osanda Gunaratne and script by Chandra Thilak Gunaratne.


Road closed for traffic

The stretch of the Thawalantenna - Talawakelle road from the 18.5 km point to the 20 km point will be closed for traffic from 10 pm today to 6 am on Monday to facilitate rehabilitation work under the Upper Kotmale Hydro electricity project police headquarters said.


All time record price for tea

An Invoice of Broken Orange Pekoe No. 1 (BOP1) grade from Galaxy Tea Factory sold at an All Time High of Rs. 660 per Kilo for the grade at the Colombo Tea Auction on October 7. The previous record for this grade was Rs. 650 per Kilo.

This tea was marketed by Asia Siyaka Commodities (Pvt) Limited.


Mobile service

A mobile service, organised by the Justice and Legal Reforms Ministry to deal with issues of birth certificates, National Identity Cards EPF and ETF, etc. will be held on October 11 and 12 at the Sumana Central College, Talawakelle.


AGM

The Colombo Branch of the Jaffna Central College Old Boys' Association will hold their 95th Annual General Meeting at 11.00 am on October 12 at the Community Centre Hall of the Bambalapitiya Flats.


Islamic lecture in Tamil

An Islamic lecture organised by Dharunnadhvah Lilkairiyath, an association of Muslim men and boys, on 'Islamic Finance' by Moulavi M. Arshard (Furqani) of ACJU will be held on October 14 after Asar prayers at Al Ma'hadul Bukhariyul Kadirie Thakiya (Jamiul Falah Jumma Mosque) 178, Layard's Broadway, Colombo 14.


Book launch

'War Vs. Peace Discourse: The Press and the Peace Process in Sri Lanka', 'A survey on the Basic Education Status of the Vedda Community in Dambana and Hennanigala: Research Report', 'Give Me Some Space for My Views: Short Stories', and 'Human Rights for Journalists: Training Handbook' will be launched at 4.00 p.m. on October 13 at the Committee Room D, BMICH, Colombo 7. The function organised by the Centre for the Study of Human Rights, University of Colombo.


Italian cultural show

The Sri Lanka Italy Friendship Society will stage Spettacolo Culturale di Musica e Danza today at 6.30 p.m. at the Russian Centre Auditorium. This cultural show will feature Italian songs and traditional Sri Lankan dances.

Two decomposed corpses washed ashore

Two unidentified decomposed male corpses were recovered from the sea shore of Palamunai, Kalmunai on Wednesday night.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said following information two unidentified bodies were found washed ashore in Palamunai beach on Wednesday night. "The victims have been killed and their legs tied to a concrete slab before they had been thrown to the sea", he added.
