Nuwara Eliya’s boys and girls excel in sports

Sandasiri Dissanayake of Sama Cycle Club won the two lap Mountain Bike event conducted on Friday in conjunction with the commencement of the work off the High Altitude Sports Complex in Nuwara Eliya.

The newly found track comprising of 9.3 kilo meters was evenly contested by the elite riders who were there to open this circuit for their future benefit.

The competitors who received the starting orders from the Minister of Sports and Public Recreation Gamini Lokuge struggled hard to go past each other in every opportunity available to them.

Once they were set off opposite the Municipal Council the riders after covering a distance of about 75 metres had to climb exactly 889 meters before they descend to the same spot where the start was.

The riders completed the course going through very difficult lanes covered with bushes and almost jungle like areas that was similar to the international standard circuits.

The organizers of the event who found this track said that this will serve as the training circuit for riders who are in the national squad hoping to compete at international events in the future.

The Standard Cycle race was won by Policeman Upul Lokuge pushing one of the favourites Suwaris Premachandra to second slot while these two riders were followed by another leading rider in the country Meemanage Perera.

This event too was evenly contested by these riders until the last moment.

AEROBEE wins Lokuge Cup

Aerobee the horse owned by I. Dissanayake was the winner of the Gamini Lokuge Cup on Friday at the Nuwara Eliya Race Course. This meet was held to mark the start of the redevelopment work on the course by the Minister Lokuge himself on this day. S.D. Janaka was the jockey who brought the first winner for the Dissanayake stable.

Janaka was also most successful jockey on the day winning three races out of six races.

After winning the Lokuge Cup he went on to bring his second winner for the same stable riding Kandyan Splendor, his third winner was Keep Looking making it three victories for the owner.

Janaka on this day proved that he is a class rider on this course. When riding on Aerobee he was way behind Siva Kumar was riding Sulanga towards victory being in the lead for almost the full race but Janaka made a last minute dash in the final ten meters to go past the line in a photo finish and also to go with the Main Cup on offer for the dayA

R. Balachandran is the other jockey to excel on Sunday with two winners under his belt.

Road Races

Lionel Samarajeeva won the Open Road race ahead of Selva Kumar while Nimal Shantha was placed third in this event. The under 20 boys event saw S.K. Wickrama win ahead of Christie Ravindranath and D. Jegatheesan.

The under 20 Girls road race saw a battle between three girls from Nuwara Eliya area, with the ultimate winner being B. M. Priyangika. She was followed by the others Jeyam Gobiar and W. Vajira.

The winners of all events were awarded certificates and cash awards which were distributed by chief guest Minister Lokuge and Ministers C.B. Ratnayake and Navin Dissanayake.
