Suspect businessman granted bail

The Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Gihan
Pilapitiya yesterday granted bail on Suppaih Logeswaran, a Colombo
businessman on an anticipatory bail application.
The Judge Pilapitiya ordered the suspect businessman to furnish cash
bail in a sum of Rs. 25,000 and a bond of Rs. 500,000 with two sureties.
According to the complaint by the Asia Broadcasting Corporation
(ABC), the suspect-businessman is alleged to have to pay the ABC a sum
of Rs. 9,421,593 on a business transaction on advertising.
Granting bail, the Judge directed the suspect to appear in court on
October 15.
Jayantha Dias Nanayakkara with Prasanna Weerasekera and Muditha
Abeysinghe appeared for the suspect-businessman.
Help save him
A.N. Nimal de Alwis (50) of No. 17, Manijothi Mawatha, Chandrawanka
Road, Pallimulla, Panadura is suffering from an acute heart ailment.
Consultant Cardiologist Dr. S. Narenthiran has recommended an urgent
Coronary Artery bypass surgery to save his life. The cost of the surgery
payable on admission to hospital is Rs. 380,000.
De Alwis says he is unable to foot this bill due to his present
financial plight.
He requests philanthropists and the public wishing to assist his
cause to send in whatever financial contributions possible to help
expedite the surgery.
All contributions should be remitted to Account Number 8410003526 at
the Commercial Bank, Panadura branch.
Moratuwa town to be renamed
The Moratuwa town will be renamed Sahajeevana Nagaraya to coincide
with World Habitat Day on October 6.
The Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Ministry together
with the Moratuwa Municipal Council and several other agencies will
launch a number of projects to give a facelift to the town.
It includes the construction of housing units, bridges, parks, roads,
etc.
The new community hall constructed at Soysapura was opened by Urban
Development and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena,
Land Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga, Housing Minister Geethanjana
Gunawardena and Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando.
National Irrigation fortnight
The National Irrigation Fortnight launched on October 1 and which
will continue until October 14 aims at enlisting public support for the
development and modernisation of the irrigation system.
It will coincide with the national irrigation development programme
titled, Nilwara Kethyayata.
Several programmes at State and divisional levels such as shramadana
camps, renovation to canals, tanks and lakes and awareness programme for
schoolchildren will be undertaken.
Teacher felicitation ceremony
A teacher felicitation ceremony organised by the Colombo Royal
College Development Society will be held at the Navarangahala, Colombo
on October 6 at 8.30 a.m. Bogoda Premaratne will be the chief guest.
Civil Appeal HC opening
The Batticaloa Civil Appeal High Court will be opened by Chief
Justice Sarath N Silva at 10.00 a.m. on October 4.
Secretary, Ministry of Justice Sugantha Kamalath and Secretary,
Judicial Service Commission P.W.D.C. Jayatilleke will participate.
CD launch
The Methodist Church, Sri Lanka will launch a CD consisting of
children's songs and nursery rhymes promoting values of peace and
harmony Koheda Yanne Walakule at 9.00 a.m. on Saturday at the National
Museum Auditorium.
The programme includes performances by children from day care centers
and nurseries.
Discussion
A discussion on 'Peace and Unity' organised by the Ampara District
All Religious Federation will be held on October 4 at Paradise Hotel,
Sainthermaruthu.
Dr. M.I.M. Jameel, Chair of the Federation and Trusty, Jumma Mosque
Sainthermaruthu will lead the discussion.
English Day
The English Day of Grade 1-2 of Gangodawila Primary College will be
held today at 8.30 a.m. to mark World Children's Day.
