Circulars in Tamil 'must' - President
COLOMBO: President Mahinda Rajapaksa has given instructions to
send public circulars in Tamil language to areas predominantly inhabited
by the Tamil speaking people.
This matter was brought to the notice of the President by teachers
and students from Northern schools who recently visited Colombo to
participate in the All Island Sports Competition, states a media release
issued by the Social Services and Social Welfare Ministry.
"It has been brought to notice that State officials and Heads of
Government Departments in areas inhabited by Tamil speaking people are
severely inconvenienced by not being able to read and understand public
circulars sent in the Sinhala language." The President at a meeting with
the teachers and students from the schools in Jaffna District directed
to send public Circulars and Circular letters in Tamil to the Northern
region.
The President at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday brought to the
notice of Ministers on the importance of adhering to this directive, the
release added.
