Circulars in Tamil 'must' - President

COLOMBO: President Mahinda Rajapaksa has given instructions to send public circulars in Tamil language to areas predominantly inhabited by the Tamil speaking people.

This matter was brought to the notice of the President by teachers and students from Northern schools who recently visited Colombo to participate in the All Island Sports Competition, states a media release issued by the Social Services and Social Welfare Ministry.

"It has been brought to notice that State officials and Heads of Government Departments in areas inhabited by Tamil speaking people are severely inconvenienced by not being able to read and understand public circulars sent in the Sinhala language." The President at a meeting with the teachers and students from the schools in Jaffna District directed to send public Circulars and Circular letters in Tamil to the Northern region.

The President at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday brought to the notice of Ministers on the importance of adhering to this directive, the release added.
