Reflections in Colour Exhibition of Oil Paintings

Jayani Pinnawala will conduct yet another oil paintings exhibition starting from October 3 at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery. Her exposure both at national and international exhibitions and knowledge she gained reading about leading painters and influenced by quotes from great personalities like Oscar Wilde she has developed a style of painting of her own to suit her vision.

Jayani Pinnawala

“I have the simplest of taste, I am always satisfied with the best” said the famous writer Oscar Wilde. Jayani Pinnawala observes an essential characteristic every painter has his/her own vision in painting. If some one can paint the best to satisfy the viewer he/she becomes a great painter and a creator. Her vision is to bring, through painting hope, joy and contentment to the society, today burdened with stress and its pace in modern living.

Thomas Kinkade a modern day painter says ‘In my paintings I try to create a world of tranquillity, joy and beauty’. Kinkade’s specific recommendations for a shining life are as unexpected as the supporting details tucked in to his paintings. In one of his publications it is stated that he as an inspired idealist, believes art has the power to touch people’s hearts and change their lives. The publication further states, that Thomas Kinkade the celebrated ‘Painter of Light’ and author of over ten books, is one of the most widely collected and beloved artists of our day.

As painter Kinkade says each person creates his life in a painting, even though you are not talented to create an enchanting piece of art, every moment in your life is another new brush stroke, your experience and decisions you make, you add more strokes so it is necessary to paint something meaningful and colourful to make your life a beautiful painting which everyone admires.

In the history of painting the Pablo Ruiz Picasso, the greatest painter in the 20th Century is the one Jayani admires very much. His creations are unique and invaluable. His life and his experiences were visibly displayed and show different stages of paintings. The blue period, the rose period and cubist phase are some of the varying stages of painting he has mastered. It is said that in Picasso the expression of his art, is always related to the circumstances of his life, it is a way of keeping one’s own diary.

Jayani believes that paintings are related to you, your life, the surroundings, people, the eye catching nature like sky, sun, rivers, ocean and flowers around you. In every painting you have one or more of all these features which are part of our lives. On the other hand it also associates with man-made features, such as houses, temples and churches, bridges, etc, which could adorn one’s painting. In life, we do face challenges so is in painting too.

For one, painting a human being is a challenge, whereas to another painting an animal will be a challenge. Painting is something which is close to your heart, to you life. She believes that whatever painting you try to do initially, it becomes a challenge, but finally becomes an accomplishment.

Jayani a product of Visakha Vidyalaya, Bambalapitiya, had excelled in studies and later joined the Sri Lanka Administrative Service.

She served the Government as an Administrator and had also served in the Foreign Service. From her school days she had taken much interest in Music and Drama. She was a member of the School Choir and also took part in plays in School, including Visakha Geetha Natakaya. She also joined Dr. Sarathchandra’s Drama ‘Sinhabahu’ while studying for her Degree at the University of Peradeniya. She started oil painting much later in life.

While serving in Rome, as Deputy Ambassador and Acting Ambassador in the Embassy of Sri Lanka, she was inspired by the rich culture of Italy and the atmosphere created by the Art consciousness of the Italian people, engage in painting.

Jayani’s creation

Italians recognise painters and sculptors as great creators and respect them for their talents. Jayani feels that if she had not lived in Italy she would never get the opportunity, or the interest to start painting, where she studied oil painting under a British painter and teacher for a short period.

During this period, her paintings were displayed at Joint Exhibitions held at the F.A.O. headquarters in Rome. Her first oil painting exhibition was held in the Isle of Capri, South of Italy, which was a success. Her paintings display a blend of eastern and western culture.

Jayani is one person, who plays with colours, which she does cleverly to produce something pleasing to the eye. Her paintings show the influence of her experiences abroad, especially her stay in Italy, visits to U.K., Arab countries and Asia. She goes for subjects that deal with the positive side of life, the warmth of the people, landscapes, animals and flowers.

“Sun- set of Age” “Empatiness” are some of her productions she admires. Both paintings bring out the feeling of loneliness and the emptiness one feels at the sunset of life. “Splendor” is another beautiful painting which is a blend of sober colours, with shadows to give the correct effect. “Nature’s Delight” is her masterpiece in landscapes, which she did in Italy. The impression and feeling created in the painting is quite unique.

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever”, an art lover had quoted in the visitor’s book after seeing her exhibition. Art is beautiful, fascinating, even a sad thought transformed into the canvas could produce a painting to attract one’s eye. The famous painter Renair once said “Greeks believe that Gods visit the earth looking for love and beauty of a wonderland. Yes, Earth is a wonderland and I like to paint it.”

The Exhibition will be held at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery from 3rd to 5th October, 2008. The opening ceremony will take place at 11.30 a.m. on October 3, 2008 and continue till 7.30 p.m. on October 4th and 5th, the exhibition will be from 9.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m.
