Exhibition of Paintings

Jayasiri Semage

An Exhibition of paintings by Kalasuri Jayasiri Semage will be organised by the Alliance Franciase de Colombo at their Auditorium from October, 3 to 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Kalasuri Jayasiri Semage is a world renowned Sri Lankan artist who has managed to register his identity in the minds of art lovers both nationally and internationally.

Having his roots strongly in the classical Ajantha-Sigiri tradition, he has become a maestro of lines. At the same time he has not been reluctant in catering to the modern cosmopolitan taste of the western educated connoisseurs. Some of his paintings display as aesthetically balances blend of eastern and western styles, yet not betraying his own originality.

He has definitely drawn positive inspiration from sophisticated modern style but, unwilling to imitate any particular artist or to be identified with any particular school, retained his own style at the centre of his experimental creations.

He has held many exhibitions both here and abroad. Some foreign galleries have selected some of his paintings for permanent display. His beautiful murals adorn Buddhist shrine rooms and sermon halls both in Malaysia and Singapore.

Several Sri Lankan Embassies abroad have chosen his paintings to be displayed there to represent the Sri Lankan identity in art. His highly eloquent painting "Hands that feed" is on permanent display at the United Nations Hall of Fame in Geneva.

Jayasiri Semage is a maestro of line that seems to be at his command at the very moment he wants. It is true that he handles shapes of colours too with the same affectivity yet, most of his work dominated by line.

The use of colour by Semage is also expressive of his own sentiments. The frequent use of subdued and subtle colours depicts a non-aggressive and peaceful spirit. His colours do not compete each other for prominence.

His paintings bring back to us our heritage and the nostalgic memories of our childhood when we still could enjoy innocence of village culture even though it was already in transition to city life.
