Blending modernity with subtlety

Review of Jayantha Silva's exhibition 'Expressions - 5':

In every sense of the brush, Jayantha Silva has taken on a different path to draw his inner artistic qualities. His technique is unmatched where the concoction of realism plays an important part in determining the message of his masterpiece. He has tackled the picturesque aspects on canvas eloquently, dealing with finer details and looks to define every outline with skill and mastery. The sketches on 'Nude' expressions are worthwhile

with each having their own grace be it simple body pictorials aptly titled 'Legs' or different individual displays on 'Face'. Silva dexterously draws finer details by creating vivid shapes of animals and interesting figures where the onlooker has to do nothing but stop and stare.

Worthy productions of a crucifixion seem so melancholic whilst a family portrait of mother and child speaks more than a thousand silent words. With the inclusion of a mind-bending zebra painting looks quite mottled with mother elephant and baby elephant caught in a moment of love. All in all, every masterpiece offers the viewer new meaning of certain things we see everyday but never thought of in a different light.

Yet, there are shortcomings of his artistic works, which is by no means a condemnation of his unique style, more so to say these could be improved on. In poses where womanly faces are perfect, the hands do not quite have that 'feminine' attribute. In 'Legs', the pair of legs in a crossing position seem as though one is slightly bigger than the other. However, the brush stroke and careful carving of the figures seem as if they would be alive.

One does take a fancy to Silva's interesting 'still life' which predominately muster an enigmatic resemblance to the artist's talent. Exuding brilliant colours of reds, whites and yellows plastered amid a monotonous background, nearly all of Silva's paintings are ultra modern blending modernity with subtlety. Nevertheless, Silva has by far exceeded expectations with this exhibition which are certainly collector's items form it is a privilege owning a Jayantha Silva creation.

'Expressions - 5' will be held at La Rambla restaurant, Tickle Road, Colombo 8 till October 5.
