Zahira College, Colombo, put up a dazzling display to become all
island schools under 19 Division one soccer champions in the tournament
conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Football Association when they beat
Dharmaraja College, Kandy 2-0 in the final played at the Bogambara
Stadium in Kandy yesterday. At half time Zahirians led 2-0.
Zahira College playing constructive soccer wrapped up the match in
the first 20 minutes of play when they alarmed two quick goals off the
boots of centre forward M.N.M. Fazal and left extreme M.N.M. Rasheed and
the Rajans never recovered from it though they put up a determined play
in the second half. M. Jamaldeen referred.
This tournament in Kandy was sponsored by Dharmaraja College. It is
commendable that this school had come forward this tournament in Kandy.
Doing the honours at the Awards ceremony were Superintendent of
Prisons. Pallekelle Tissa Jayasinghe, Former Assistant General Manager
(CP) Bank of Ceylon Ananda Jayasundara, Janaka Hettiarachchi and
Principal of Darmaraja College S. M. Keerthiratne.
In the quarter finals Zahira College, Colombo beat Maliyadewa
College, Kurunegala 10-1, St. Thomas College, Matara beat Wickramabahu
Central College, Gampola 4-3, Dharmaraja College beat De Mazenada
College, Kandana 3-1, St. Benedicts College, Kotahena beat St. Petera
College, Bambalapitiya 6-0.
In the semi finals Zahira College beat St. Thomas College 6-0 and
Dharmaraja College beat St. Benedicts College 1-0.
St. Thomas College, Matara clinched the third place defeating
St.Benedicts College 2-0
