Ayurvedic Physicians receive appointments

Two hundred and seventy six graduate ayurvedic physicians will
receive their appointment letters from the Prime Minister Rtnasiri
Wickremanayake at “Temple Trees” today.
These graduates are being absorbed in to the indigenous Medicine
Ministry under the concept of Hela Wedha Punarudha (Reviving of
Indigenous Medicine) of Indegeneous Medicine Minister Tissa Karalliyedde.
Minister Karalliyedde told Daily News that since all existing
vacancies in Government Ayurvedic Hospitals and central dispensaries
have been filled the new recruits will be detailed to serve in the
islandwide ayurvedic community health promotion services as barefoot
doctors.
He said that presently there are 49 ayurvedic hospitals, 159 central
ayurvedic dispensaries and 230 free ayurvedic rural dispensaries
islandwide.
Six Lankan fishermen arrested
Six Sri Lankan fishermen caught poaching in Indian waters were
arrested Monday by the Coast Guard and remanded to judicial custody,
official sources said.Their mechanised boat was seized. The men were
from Trincomalee in Sri Lanka’s east. “Preliminary interrogation reveals
that they had no links to terrorist activity and were merely fishing in
our waters,” R. Sabaratnam, a police official who took the suspects to
prison, told IANS.
Rs. 1.5 b to develop Kithul industry
The Kithul industry used to be a home industry of our villagers of
the past. Their needs of sugar and making festive related sweets, were
done using Kithul pani. Besides this theliya - or ‘soft liquor’ and also
toddy used to be an indigenous medicine. Therefore we want to have this
industry resuscitate, says the PC Councillor of the (CP) Sanjeewa
Kaviratne.
He said he has taken steps to form related. Kithul industrial
association a Rs. 1.5 billion has been obtained from the Central
Province Industrial Ministry to develop this industry.
Scarcity of beef
There is big scarcity of beef in the Kandy city area which has sent
the price of a kilogramme of beef to anything between Rs. 380 to Rs.
400.
Consumers say that the butchers also include bones to about 200 to
250 grammes for this too they will have to pay the price of beef.
Buddhist talk
Dr. Basil de Silva will deliver a public Buddhist talk in English on
"Psychology Behind Meditation" at a meeting of the Servants of the
Buddha Society on Saturday, September 27 at 4.30 p.m. at the Maitri
Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
Stage play
The English Literary Association of Devi Balika Vidyalaya will stage
the "Theatrical Extravaganza, Ella Disenchanted" on September 29 at the
Bishop's College Auditorium. The play is directed by the veteran artist
Gamini Haththotuwegama.

The 79th Annual General Meeting of the Old Boys' Union of Holy Cross
College, Kalutara will be held on Sunday, September 28 at the Crooss
Memorial Hall at the College, under the patronage of Rev. Brother Ranjit
Perera, Brother Director.

The Sri Lanka Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (SLARCIK) has
joined hands with Institute of Biology (IOB) and Media Resource Service
of the SLAAS in organising a one day conference on 'Grassroot
Innovations for National Development on September 25 from 8.30 a.m. to 5
