Schools in Kandy closed tomorrow

The Government has decided to declare a holiday for all schools and pirivenas in Kandy district tomorrow where the funeral of former President D.B.Wijetunga is scheduled to be held.

Steps have also been taken to close down all the liquor shops and meat stalls in Udunuwara, Yatinuwara and Gangawata Divisional Secretariat Divisions where the residence of former President is situated and the Kandy Municipal Grounds in Getambe where the funeral of former President will take place. This was announced at a discussion held at Kandy District Secretariat yesterday regarding the funeral arrangements of former President.

The funeral arrangements are jointly organised by the Central Government, Provincial Council and Kandy District Secretariat.

Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon has given instructions to hoist white flags in all Local Government divisions. The remains of former president will be brought to the Kandy MC grounds in a motorcade.

The remains of former President D.B.Wijetunga lie at his residence in Pilimathalawa for the public to pay last respect. The remains will be taken to the Parliaments complex on September 25 for the Parliamentarians to pay their last respect from 9.00am to 11.00 am. Later the remains will be taken to MC Grounds, Getambe and the funeral of former President will takes place on September 25 at 3.00pm under full State patronage.
