Seed paddy programme

The Rangiri Dambulla Farmer Company in collaboration with the Agriculture Department has made arrangements to launch a seed paddy cultivation programme with the participation of farmers.

Fifty acres of paddy would be used for the first stage of this programme with the Rangiri Dambulla Farmer Company providing the seed quantities and technical know - how.
 


Ceremony to welcome new entrants

A ceremony to welcome new entrants to the Faculty of Human Resources Management 2007/2008 will be held on September 18 at the faculty premises with the participation of senior students.

Prof. Ananda J. Patabendige, Dean, Faculty of Management and Senior Lecturer K. A. S. Dhammike, Head of the Human Resources Development Department will participate.


Badr Shaba day

The Maligawatte Jumma Mosque has organised a Badr Shaba day programme today after Tharaweeh prayers at the Mosque. Masjidul Mohideen Jumma Mosque, Mattakuliya, Colombo Pesh Imam Moulavi M. L. M. Akran (Minhaji) will speak on the 'Significance of Badr'.

The Badr Mowlood will be held tomorrow after tharaweeh prayers.


Lecture on Zakaath

Almuslimaath, the Sri Lankan Association of Muslim Women and Girls, have organised a discourse for women, on 'The Importance of Zakaath', at the Malsara hall, Dehiwela (close to the Dehiwela junction) on September 20 from 9.30 a.m. till 2.00 p.m.

The 27th Annual General Meeting of the Old Boys’ Association of D.S. Senanayake College will be held at the R.I.T. Alles Hall of D.S. Senanayake College, 62, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7 on September 20 at 2.30 p.m.

 


Panel discussion

The fourth in a monthly series of Panel Discussions focusing on Human Rights will be held on September 18 from 04.30 p.m. to 06.30 p. m. at the BCIS Auditorium.

The theme for this session is 'Exercising Voting Rights in a Democracy.' Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo Rohan Edirisinghe will speak on 'How to Protect Democratic Rights through Vote' while Chairman, PAFFERAL Kingsley Rodrigo will speak on the 'Responsibilities of the Voters at Elections and the Sri Lankan Experience'. Attorney-at-Law Suresh Chandra will be the moderator at the event.


Ifthar programme

The Ramazan Ifthar special programme organised by Quthubiyyathul Quadhiriyyah World Majlis will be held on September 17, at the Dawatagaha Jumma Masjid and shrine under the patronage of Ash-shaikh As-seyed Moulana Muhammadh Ashrafudeen Jailani, spiritual leader of Quthubiyyathul Quadhiriyyah World Majlis.

Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana will be the chief guest.

Al-Haj Moulavi A.C. Ahmad Faleel (Cassimi) chief Katheeb of the Colombo Dawatagaha Jumma Masjid and shrine will deliver a special talk.


Art exhibition

The God's Own Children Foundation with the support of the EU will hold a children's art exhibition at St. Paul's Milagiriya Church Hall, 295, Galle Road, Colombo 4 on September 30 from 9.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. and October 1 from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m.

Entrance is free.


School AGM

The Annual General Meeting of St Joseph's College colombo Batch of '90 will be held on September 20 at 6.30 p.m. at the Grand Oriental Hotel.


Anagarika Dharmapala Commemoration

A motorcade organised by the ‘Dampal Ranhanda’ to mark the 144th anniversary of Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala will tour the city today. The procession will call over at Temple Trees where President Mahinda Rajapaksa will pay homage to the Dharmapala statue.


Buddhist talk

Prof. Raja de Alwis will deliver a Buddhist talk in English on Visions During Meditation at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on September 20, at 4.30 p.m. at Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Government IT service soon

The Government Information Technology Service would be established shortly, stated Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister, Karu Jayasuriya. The new service will facilitate the submission of audit reports to the Parliament without delay, the sources added.

The set up of the Government Information Technology Services was approved by the Cabinet in October 2007.


Annual Esala Perahera

The annual Esala perahera of the historic Lankatillake Raja Maha Viharaya, Udunuwara, Kandy which begins on Wednesday 17, will be concluded on Sunday 21 with the water cutting ceremony.


Amalige Sihinaya launched tomorrow

Buddhika Anjalee Ratnayake, Grade Eleven student of Museaus College will launch her award winning book Amalige Sihinaya tomorrow at 3.00 p.m. at the Sudharshi Hall, Baudhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7. Professor Kusuma Karunaratne will be the chief guest. Dr. Praneeth Abeysundera, Dr. Kolithabhanu Dissanayake, Museaus Principal N. K. Pilapitiya and Sumana Jayathilaka will also participate.

Ratnayake began writing a children’s story titled Mookalane Holman in 2004. She wrote her second children’s story Amalige Sihinaya in 2006. She entered Punchi Ayage Kathandara competition in 2007 and won an award.

She is the second daughter of veteran broadcaster Dhammika P. Ratnayake and announcer Deepanee Senaratne (Ratnayake). Buddhika is an extraordinary girl with the talent of singing, dancing, acting and writing. Equivalently she proved her mettle in passing London Advanced Level Examination acquiring distinctions in all subjects.


Programme to increase volume of cinnamon exports

The Export Agriculture Department has launched a programme to expand the volume of cinnamon export targetting 3,000 metric tons by 2010. Under the Api Wawamu-Rata Nagamu national programme.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 1 million. Sri Lanka which accounts for 90 per cent of the world export of cinnamon, has 25,413 hectares under cultivation at present. Sri Lanka’s cinnamon export earnings accounted for Rs. 2,229.9 million.


New Director for Teacher Training School

Vice Principal of Royal College, Colombo Prasanna Upashantha has been promoted as Director Teacher Training Schools by the Education Ministry.

He is due to assume duties in his new capacity soon.

‘Commerce Day’ organised by the commerce students of the Janadhipathi Vidyalaya, Maharagama under the guidance of Principal, J.A.W.S. Siriwardena will be held today at 9.00 a.m. at the Maharagama Youth Centre.
